    “Mama?”

    Pale crystalline eyes, clouded with hot tears gazed upwards towards the sky, the billions of ethereal warriors above glittering down at him with a sad sort of glow, his voice a quiet, childlike whisper. It was late at night, far later than the young tom usually stayed up, but he hadn’t been able to sleep ever since…ever since…

    A lonely tear slid down his cheek, leaving a dark trail through gray and white fur, and the tom swallowed, wrinkling his nose at the salty sensation tingling throughout his nasal passages. It had all happened so fast, so unbelievably fast. He finally had a mama again, a mother, and then…and then…

    “If…if you’re listening…mama…”

    His head was tilted up to the stars of Silverpelt, brilliant white lights reflecting within his eyes, shining with tears. Fluffy fur, recently groomed awkwardly by himself in an attempt to look the best for his Mother of Stars ruffled lightly in the night breeze, the curly bits on his neck he was unable to reach tufting upwards with the wind. He was at the highest point in the camp he’d dared reach, an outcropping of rock reaching upwards towards the sky. It was cold, as if even the air was mourning her passing.

    For once in his life, despite being surrounded by more family than he ever imagined he’d have, the patched tom felt completely and utterly alone. His heart hurt, twisted in his chest. His mama, the mama he’d always dreamed would return to him, albeit not in the way he had expected…was gone. And it had all happened so suddenly, right when everything had come together. Why did she have to go? Why? Why did his mamas always leave him? Could he have done something to protect her? Was it his fault? Shrugging aside a tear, the tom hesitated, oversized black ears flopping against his skull. A quiet whisper emerged from his lips, and his gaze dropped back to the ground.

    “I…I miss you, mama.” The words were near silent, carried upwards by the spiraling wind, up to the stars. “I…I really, really miss you.”

    He took a shaky breath, swallowing back the tears in his throat, scuffing his pine-soft pad against the cool rock, rubbing the other paw against his eyes in an attempt to quell the tears that threatened to spill over. Yewpatch hesitated, lifting his head once more to the sky.

    “I love you, mama. And…I’m gonna make you proud. I promise.”   A tear dropped to the earth, splattering into a tiny puddle that sunk into the rock.

    And for a heartbeat, Yewpatch could have sworn the brightest star in the sky, just for a moment, twinkled ever brighter.

I feel so sorry for poor Yewpatch in all this ;A;
He only just met his mama and -sniffs and begins crying- now she's gone again.
